The British Retail Consortium (BRC) is a global safety and quality certification programme, used throughout the UK and the world by many thousands of certificated suppliers in over 90 countries. The BRC Global Standards are widely respected and used by suppliers and global retailers. They facilitate a standardisation of quality, safety, operational criteria and manufacturers’ fulfilment of legal obligations. BRC standards also help provide protection to the consumer/public.
The Global Standard for Food Safety was first developed in 1998 by the food service industry to enable suppliers to be audited against a single, consistent standard, by third party Certification Bodies. Built on the principles of clear risk-based requirements, informative reporting and auditor competence, the Standard has developed and evolved with input from a wide base of international stakeholders including retailers, caterers, food manufacturers and other certification bodies.
The Standard is managed by The BRC who license the use of the Standard to Certification Bodies who must be both accredited by their national Accreditation Body and abide by strict BRC requirements for auditor competency, reporting and performance.
